I found this great video about eco-design. This interior designer’s goal is to spread the word of environmental living while providing eco-friendly luxury. A green and serene home is the goal. I did laugh when she called herself a “hardcore environmentalist” because she does yoga every day. OMG, LOL, ONYD, there it goes again. Okay, as I was saying… This is still a great eco-consumer video on designing your urban home. Now if you will excuse me I have an organic soy mocha latte frappuccino to sip on (because I’m a hardcore environmentalist you know).

Hint: if you are looking for an eco-friendly look that is cost effective and adds a beautiful to any room find a second hand night stand and paint with a low VOC paint and place a soy candle on it.

During construction she used LEED certified workers for the construction process. One of their techniques during the construction process was to have continuously running HEPA air filters in contained areas to decrease airborne particulate pollution.

Here are a few things on the eco-friendly interior design list:

Hand-knotted Vegetable Dye Wool Rugs for the floor. Turkistan area rugs are woven by nomads in the Turkistan region using traditional techniques passed on for generations. The hand-knotted construction provides durability and longevity of heirloom rugs that will be cherished for many years. These rugs are made from 100% organic wool which provides comfort and softness. Coloring is a vegetable dye to give warmth of color and will fade to a heirloom look and feel

Recycled antiques and many other vintage pieces to give a classy feel yet still being environmentally friendly by recycling.
Solar shades with black out lining

Solar Shades and cellular shades significantly increase energy efficiency. They reject heat in the summer and keep heat in during the winter saving you energy costs.

Paintings from local artists made from natural materials for the walls are used.

Low VOC varnished wood floors. VOC stands for volatile organic compounds. Most VOC’s off gas toxic fumes that have been known to cause pollution in the environment as well as cause serious illness in humans and animals.

Original wood trim is stripped with non-caustic materials which takes longer but is a safer alternative.

Organic sheets and pillows are used in the bedroom. You can find 100% organic fair trade linens on the internet fairly easy.

Linoleum is used in the kitchen as an eco-friendly resource. Linoleum is a durable, biodegradable material that is comfortable, warm and quiet. Constructed from all natural ingredients, this flooring is a low-toxic flooring option.

Natural limestone counter tops are used in the kitchen. The decision to use a natural stone in your kitchen is an environmentally friendly choice to make when designing your kitchen.

All appliances are Energy Star rated (remember to look for the Energy Star label when shopping) Energy Star models are the most energy efficient in any product category, exceeding the energy efficiency minimums set by the federal government.

According to the wall street journal it is estimated that we use 100 billion plastic bags annually in the United States. It takes 12million barrels of oil to make this many bags. These bags end up in the land fill take a 1000 years to biodegrade. When bags are exposed to sunlight they begin to break down into small pieces and leach into the waters ways. These chemicals are found in fish that we eat and are responsible for endocrine disorders such as diabetes and thyroid conditions. These videos will explore your alternatives to plastic bags.
